About the Hatfield History Project

This website is the product of a year-long collaboration among Breor Elementary School, the Center for Computer-Based Instructional Technology at the University of Massachusetts, Hatfield Historical Society, and the Hatfield Historical Commission. The technology coordinator at Breor worked with curriculum and technology specialists at CCBIT to bring history to third grade students.
Each student chose a different historical event, person or building to investigate. They were taught note taking skills and became experts in their specific area. They visited sites in town to learn about Hatfield's past. Students were able to use primary documents, text books and other primary source documents that were digitized for internet use.

We created a work board and then students created a brochure about their topic.  Students also created a timeline. After completing their research, students learned a web-authoring program with the aid of the computer lab coordinator and created this website.
This project meets the Massachusetts State curriculum framework in History and Social Studies, particularly learning standard #3 on research, evidence, and point of view. The standard states that: "Students will acquire the ability to frame questions that can be answered by historical study and research; collect , evaluate and employ information from primary and secondary sources, and to apply it in oral and written presentations."

Students looked for information in historical books.
Students then began to look for information using primary source documents.

Students created original artwork based on their research.

Students also scanned their artwork into the computer.
