In 1665 families from Connecticut settled North of
Northampton. Most of the families that settled on the west side were the
Dickinsons, Beldings, Graves, Warners,
Billings, Porters, and Fields. In 1668 Settlers on the West side began to
build their own meeting house because it is important for a town to have
their own religion. They did not want to go to the meeting house on the
other side of the river. The settlers asked Hadley if they could form their
own town.
