Farming

Farming is very important to Hatfield. Farmers in the 1700's raised cattle. In the 1800's farmers raised a lot of dairy cows to produce butter to send to Boston. In 1816 Simon Smith raised the first crop of corn to make brooms. In the 1800's tobacco replaced broom corn as the major crop. People used to have large families to work on the farm, now the work is done by Jamaican men. Harvesting used to be done by hand now big machines are used to harvest. Farmers are also raising different types of crops.

The farmers in Hatfield used horses to plow their fields. They used scythes to cut the tobacco. There are so many kinds of farming in Hatfield.  There is potato farming, tomato farming, and cucumber farming. There are so many kinds of farming in Hatfield.  So many!
