First Congregational Church

Settlers built the first church in 1668. Hope
Atherton was the first minister in 1670. The church stood in the
middle of the Main Street. Hope Atherton died in 1677. A new
minister wasn't found until 1683. Nathanial Chauncy was the minister in 1683. Nathanial
Chauncy died in 1685. A new minister was William Williams. He served
from 1686 until 1741. St. Joseph's church was built in 1892. The
first church is part of the story of Hadley. Brian

The First Congregational Church was built in 1849. It was the fourth meeting house for Hatfield. The settlers built a church for themselves in 1668. Hope Atherton was the minister in that church. The Church stood in the middle of Main Street. It was a 30 foot square building. The church is still standing now on School Street.Garret |
